Previous Collectors of the Month

Introduction

My name is Willem Nettinga from Ontario, Canada. My favourite team is the Toronto Maple Leafs, and my favourite player is Henrik Zetterberg.

What/Who Do You Collect?

I have a small Leafs collection and a fairly substantial Zetterberg pc. I currently own 26 Zetterberg cards that are serial numbered 1/1 (not including printing plates). I also have 35 jersey numbered cards (ex. 40/100) amongst many others.

The reason I collect Henrik Zetterberg is because of Zetterberg’s play on the ice, and charitable endeavours off of it, have led me to respect him both as a hockey player and a person. I think it would be hard to find a classier person in the NHL today.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

In 2008, when Detroit won the Stanley Cup, I was 14 years old. Like many Canadians, I went into that final series watching Sidney Crosby in his first Stanley Cup Finals. What really caught my eye though was the performance of Henrik Zetterberg. At times he would shut down Crosby, and ultimately win the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP. From that point on I was a Zetterberg fan.

Coincidentally, I started collecting hockey cards the next year in 2008-09. The first set I put together was 08-09 Victory. I loved it because every pack had an insert or a rookie card. Of course, it holds little value, but that’s not what entry level products are for. It was fun to open and got me started on the path of collecting. I then put together the base sets for 08-09 UD Series 1 and 2 by opening blaster boxes and sorting cards until I had completed the set. I’d soon start buying jersey cards on eBay and my collection just progressed from there. Now I mainly focus on high-end cards, not for their monetary value, but for the fun, you can have to chase them down and acquiring them.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

My favourite cards are my 2002-03 Zetterberg Young Guns Exclusives. I have two copies of this card; both are one of a kind. One is jersey numbered 15/75. The other is Beckett graded pristine 10 (highest graded, population 1).

Another favourite of mine is the 16-17 Leaf Ultimate One-Timer Jumbo Memorabilia. The game-used World Cup of Hockey patch looks absolutely amazing. This was purchased on eBay, as were the YG Exclusives.

My favourite non Henrik Zetterberg card is an Auston Matthews Maple Leaf Marks autograph. I pulled this card myself from a hobby box of Centennial I ordered from CloutsnChara!

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

o 11/12 Panini Prime Captain’s Cloth 2/2
o 13/14 Panini Prime Captain’s Cloth 1/2
o Zetterberg Masterpiece Portraits Card (Hand painted/signed by the artist)
o Anything Henrik Zetterberg: Amazing Patches, Jerseys, Numbered Cards (40/###) & 1/1’s.

Introduction

My name is Aaron from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I have been collecting hockey cards since I was 12 years old, and my favourite team is the Toronto Maple Leafs and my favourite player is Jhonas Enroth. Thanks for the feature in your newsletter, CnC!

What/Who Do You Collect?

Great question! I’ve always been a big fan of the goalies, and have always tried to pick up cards of goalies I liked to watch on TV. The largest collection I have is of former Buffalo Sabres goaltender Jhonas Enroth, which I have been working on since 2010-2011.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

I started collecting Enroth because, as a smaller goaltender myself, I have always appreciated Jhonas’ ability to play at the highest level of hockey for a long time. His technical ability on the ice is something I’ve enjoyed watching for many years now, and continue to do so today. I remember watching his first NHL win many years ago against the Maple Leafs and just being amazed the whole game at how he handled himself in the net.

Ever since then I wanted to try and collect as many cards as I could of the Swedish goaltender. By my count, as I write this, I currently have over 300 Enroth cards in my collection (Along with 28 1/1’s).

What’s Your Favourite Item?

Oh man, what a tough question. It’s so hard to pick just one thing. As I mentioned earlier, there are 28 1/1’s currently in my collection. Any of those could be considered my favourite just by their scarcity alone, to be honest. Along the way, there have also been many non-1/1’s that have great stories to tell, which make them some of my favourite cards to date. However, if I had to choose just one card, I would say my favourite piece would have to be the 09-10 Upper Deck Ice Premiere Auto Patch /10. The card from top to bottom is just beautiful I think. Plus it took me quite a few years after the initial release to land one of them. I eventually found a collector who hoarded a huge number of Ice Premiere’s from 2009-10 and was somehow able to wrestle one out of his collection.

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

Haha, if it’s an Enroth card that I don’t have (and it’s a lot of them), then it’s on the want list. There are many cards that still have not found its way into my collection yet, so the chase will have to keep on going. If I were to summarize some of my top wants that I would love to acquire, they would be listed as followed:

o 2009-10 Artifacts Black Rookie #179 Jhonas Enroth /5
o 2010-11 ITG BTP Masked Men Gold #MM-26 Jhonas Enroth /10
o 2010-11 Score French Backs #95 Jhonas Enroth
o 2011-12 Prime Premier Game Patches #38 Jhonas Enroth /3
o 2014-14 Upper Deck MVP Gold Script #80 Jhonas Enroth /100
o Any 1/1 card, Printing Plates, Show, Expo, Vault Stamp, Proof Cards, etc.

Introduction

Hello fellow collectors my name is Denis Beauregard, 38 years old from Macamic, Québec. It’s an honor for me to showcase my Ray Bourque PSA collection.

What/Who Do You Collect?

I collect Ray Bourque and currently have the collection that is ranked 1st in 5 of 6 PSA ‘s Registry Set of Ray Bourque.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

I grew up a Bruins fan and my favourite player was Ray Bourque. I started to collect cards at the beginning of the “junk era” in the early 1990’s. I bought some packs of Upper Deck and mostly Pro Set. Yeah I know, Pro Set! Quickly, I had a few of Ray’s card and wanted more. That was the beginning. I kept buying Bourque’s cards for a few years and then I put my collection away for quite some time.

I went back into the hobby in 2005 and been an active collector since. Now I concentrate my collection on Ray Bourque’s playing days cards from 1980 to 2001. I really enjoy getting them graded or buying high graded cards.  Today I have 598 different Ray Bourque cards graded only by PSA of Ray Bourque. I have about 700 more ungraded.  My PSA collection is ranked 1st in 5 of 6 PSA‘s Registry Set of Ray Bourque.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

I like all the 1980 to 1989 cards which I try to have in PSA 10 condition. I enjoy the look of the 1981 OPC #1 card and same for the sticker card.

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

Every day I’m looking on Ebay if there is something that catches my eyes but if I had to pick one, I’d say the

1999 O-PEE-CHEE CHROME ICE MASTERS RAY BOURQUE REFRACTOR #IM7.

I keep searching for cards that provide something that I still don’t have like an NHL shield, a tag or a button, stuff like that.

Introduction

My name is Kendall Mullin from Saint John, NB. I’ve been collecting cards most of my life, with a few stops and restarts along the way. In 2003 I re-started and have not stopped … and here is the reason for that …

What/Who Do You Collect?

I’m proud to say that I have the largest and most complete Marc-Andre Fleury card collection on the planet.  I have over 87% of all the Fleury cards that have been produced, which includes 489 pack inserted #1/1’s (which can be seen at https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/albums/72157687302788035).

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

I have always been a Goalie fan as well as a Penguins fan. I loved watching Michel Dion, Denis Herron, Gilles Meloche, Greg Millen, Tom Barrasso, and Frank Pietrangelo through the years. When Marc-Andre was selected 1st overall in the entry draft, it seemed like a no-brainer to start collecting him.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

I have several mini masks that have been signed and personalized by Marc-Andre, but my favourite item is the 2018 President’s Choice StickHandle (#1/1) featuring the nameplate from a game-used Marc-Andre Fleury rookie stick. On the back, the card has been labelled “This card has been made exclusively for the Kendall Mullin collection.

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

I’m always searching for cards to add to my collection, and I’m constantly adding and updating my want list. It can be found on my website – https://www.marcandrefleurycards.com/completewantlist.htm.

Probably my most sought after card is the 2006-07 ITG Going for Gold – Autograph. It was not listed as an SP when it was released, but I have never seen one. I have listed this card on multiple forums in the past with a $200 finder’s fee … to no avail.

Introduction

My name is Dan from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada and I am one of the owners of CloutsnChara.

What/Who Do You Collect?

I am related to Bill Cook and Bun Cook who played on the New York Rangers in the 1920s and that is who I currently collect. They are cousins of my Grandpa on my mom’s side.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

Since finding out I was related to them, I decided to try and collect as much of their cards as possible. Finding cards from the 1920s is not easy at all but I enjoy the hunt and get excited when I see one I don’t have.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

A lot of my pieces are pretty awesome since they are so old but some of my favourite pieces are the cut autos from Upper Deck, Panini & ITG. The reason is that when I showed my mom the autographs of them, she couldn’t believe the way they did their autographs because they are very similar to the way she would do hers and that’s without her ever seeing it before.

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

The majority of the items I need now are the cut autos from The Cup, Superlative, ITG Ultimate and other sets. I have only seen a couple here and there but hopefully, I can start finding more of them.

Introduction

My name is Paul from Mississauga, Ontario and I’ve been part of the C&C community for several years now under the alias “leafer70”

What/Who Do You Collect?

I like to build the Upper Deck S1/S2 and O-Pee-Chee sets every year for nostalgic reasons. I also like to collect cards of various players from my favourite team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. But my biggest collection, by far, is my Borje Salming PC.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

When I was trying to narrow down my focus to one particular player, it soon became an obvious choice. Not only was Salming one of the best ever to put on the blue & white but I’ll never forget writing to him as a child when he was recovering from a nasty eye injury and to my surprise, I got a written reply! You never forget those things. And now, I believe I have the largest Borje Salming card collection out there!

What’s Your Favourite Item?

It’s hard to narrow it down to just one but some of my favourites are included in this post.

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

Of course, any Salming card I don’t already possess would be on my want list but one particular card that I would really like to get my hands on is from the 2017 President’s Choice Blue & White Centennial and it’s one of the Assigned Seats Auto relics. I just need the grey coloured one to complete the rainbow. The Maple Leaf Marks auto from the 2017-18 Centennial set is also high on my list.

Introduction

My name is Jordan and I am from Essex, Ontario. I am 30 years old. I first got into the hobby as a little boy growing up. My neighbour across the street used to sell hockey cards and I would go over with all my change and see what caught my eye.

I stopped collecting for about 10 years once my neighbour moved and I got the itch to collect again after receiving a box of upper deck series one for Christmas. And I haven’t looked back since.

What/Who Do You Collect?

I collect hockey cards and signed pictures/pucks. I’m a huge Leafs fan, however, you wouldn’t know it by looking at my collection. I’m a big collector of young guns or the cup (if I can afford it) rookie cards. I collect McDavid, Crosby, Gretzky, Marner, Ovechkin, Orr, etc. Unfortunately, my wallet is only so big haha.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

I started collecting more higher end rookies as I consider it as an investment. You’re betting on a player to perform well in order for his value to go up. Obviously, it’s a lot riskier than investing with a bank but I have a lot more fun doing it this way and it’s nice having all your cards to display. Eventually, I plan on selling some cards but that’s 30 plus years away.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

Do I have to choose just one…..I would have to say my absolute favourite item would be my signed picture of Crosby’s first NHL goal. I wanted that since his rookie year and saved up my whole summer just to afford it. From that picture on, my memorabilia collection grew to where it is today.  A close second favourite item would have to be my 2 graded 10 young guns of Mcdavid followed by a 4 colour cup rookie of Landeskog.

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

There are only a few cards on my want list right now. I’ve always wanted a Bobby Orr rookie card but the condition needs to be between a Beckett or PSA 2-5. The other card is a Crosby future watch.

You can reach me at [email protected] or at CNC: jdrleafs2002 if you have any of the above cards for sale or trade.

Introduction

Hello everyone, I’m Chris. I have been collecting for 30 years now. I’m from Listowel, Ontario but live in Waterloo, Ontario now. The first set I tackled myself was the 91-92 Score.

What/Who Do You Collect?

I currently collect an Upper Deck set every year including the Young Guns. I have a UD set from every year starting 2005-06 and other sets from the mid-’80s to present. Other than that I collect rookies that aren’t in the Young Guns set and the Toronto Maple Leafs. I have a bunch of Leafs from the SP Authentic, SPX, SP Game Used years. Usually, stick to Rookies unless there is a player I want to collect.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

I have a Cyclone Taylor collection as he was from my hometown. I also collect players that were born or raised in the area. I also PC Doug Gilmour. I have many cards but not even close to the numbers of cards out there. I have several signed jerseys and memorabilia.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

My favourite items are the ones that are shown in the pictures.

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

I am currently seeking the newest Young Guns. I also am interested in Upgrading some older investments like my Gretzky, Lemieux and Roy rookies.

Introduction

Hello everyone, our names are Roman & Michaela.

What/Who Do You Collect?

My wife Michaela and I collect MIKE SMITH. We have also some minor collections of Burns and players who played in our hometown Vienna. But the collection of Mike Smith is our highlight and the one we are focusing on. We have no specific kind of cards/souvenirs we are looking for – we collect all of him.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

We just like the way he plays and also the thrilling moments when he is out of the net.

I think every Goalie has his specific style and due to any reason, Smitty got our favourite. Perhaps cause his style is crazy/unique in some ways and also splitting the masses.

You can love him or hate him but there is not much between.

After watching Team Canada LIVE at the IIHF world championship 2015 in Prague I wanted to give my wife a little present with a memorabilia card of him.

This is where it all started in July 2015 and ends up (counting today) in these numbers: 716 cards (~85%), including 34 1of1s (of 80 – ~42%)

Additional we have 45 printing plates (with one complete 4 colour rainbow), 14 stickers, 56 cards of Final Vault and some customs made

What’s Your Favourite Item?

For my own I have 3 favourite items, also because of the story behind them:

o 2012-13 Panini Prime Signatures #53 Black 1/1 (Seen Below)

We were on holiday and I got a circle round breakdown. I had to go to the hospital for infusions but no crucial thing. After coming back in the evening I checked eBay and there was it with a buy it now! Putted online 5 minutes ago. If I hadn’t my little accident we would be already at dinner and perhaps the card would be gone once I got back and checked eBay.

It was also my Birthday, so I made myself a little present

o 2012-13 Limited Jumbo Materials #JJMS NHL Shields 1/1 (See Below)

The card was listed in a European online store but with value 0, there was also no buy-option. I just wondering why it was still on the shop and give it a try to write the owner. I didn’t expect much but then I got the reply that he still had the card. So the very last hope of writing an email leads to a real special card.

o 2013-14 Dominion Ensigns Signatures #SEMS 1/1 (See Below)

From the beginning, this card was my personal white whale. I knew it was outside somewhere due to a posted picture but it was always far far away….unreachable. But then 1 month ago it appears on eBay…. I was unbelievably happy to make the best offer on it. The card is on the way and I can’t wait to have it in my hands

The highlight of our total collection:

2015 IIHF Men’s World Championship Game Worn White Jersey – Worn in preliminary games vs Latvia and Switzerland

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

Hard to say. As we are missing most x/10 and lower, every new card is something great.

But if we had to choose I would say the top four are:

o Closing the wholes in 2003/04

o Completing the Champ’s Mini of 2008/09 and 2009/10

o Completing the 2011-12 Panini Prime Genuine Letters -series with the last missing letter H

o The 2 missing printing plates of 2017-18 Upper Deck Canadian Tire Team Canada #59

Introduction

My name is Richard Velligan and I go by rvelligan on CloutsnChara’s forums.

What/Who Do You Collect?

I currently PC cards of 2018-19 Selke Award Nominee Ryan O’Reilly of the St. Louis Blues.  My goal is to own each card of his, including Printing Plates.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

My card collection for Ryan O’Reilly started at the beginning of the 2009-10 season.  Collecting the hometown team Chicago Blackhawks was getting expensive with Toews and Kane.  Colorado has always been my favorite non- hometown team.

I wanted to start a PC for Matt Duchene, but his prices were out of my budget.   I was reading about the Avalanche outlook for the season and read about their 2nd round pick (33rd overall) making the team out of training camp. I started looking online at his cards and they were quite affordable, so I decided to dive headfirst into his cards.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

My favorite cards are the 2009-10 The Cup Quad Foundations Patches /10, which I own all 10 copies!!!  The hunt to acquire all 10 took over 6-1/2 years and look great together.

My other favorite is 2013-14 Dominion Button 1/1.  This card was acquired in a trade with a person many of us know in the hobby, SATOKEN!!!  I sent him a message asking if he still owned the card.  He replied and I was able to secure the 2013-14 Dominion Button Roberto Luongo 1/1.  We completed the trade and have a great friendship to this day.  We even met in person in Tokyo back in January 2018.  He is worth the follow on social media – @SATOKEN44

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

My current want list is any card I currently don’t own of Ryan O’Reilly.  The 2 biggest cards on the want list are 2009-10 UD Black Letterman #90 “Letter R” /99 and 2012-13 Panini Prime Genuine Letters 5/7 “Letter L”, which would finish off both nameplates.

Introduction

My name is Marty (MasyDoc on Cloutsnchara)

What/Who Do You Collect?

I collect any and all things Rick Nash. I currently have 863 unique cards as well as multiple photo’s, toys and other memorabilia.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

I am a huge fan of the London Knights and have been since the year of their record of futility of 3 WINS in a season back in 1995/96.   As you can imagine, it was pretty easy to just show up and get tickets anywhere in the building that year.    Anyway, I continued to attend games after that horrible year as it was always a cool way to see the up and coming players in the OHL. Then came the 2000/01 Season and top draft pick Rick Nash… What an incredible young player he was!   I was so impressed that when I seen the autographed photos they were selling of him at the arena for $10, I just had to have one and so it had begun…. my first piece in what would become my Rick Nash PC.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

I love unique items and I was lucky enough to be around when CNC put together a set of “Members” cards. I was featured on a card along with Rick Nash in maybe one of the only dual autographs of PC Collector and PC Player there is in existence.

Another unique piece and honorable mention is a 1/1 card from ITG when they produced a set of cards exclusively for CNC Pack Wars. The artwork (although nothing extremely fancy) was never featured in any other product making it a really sweet addition. Also need to add that the checklist of that set was very extensive and many huge names past and present. I was awarded 2nd overall pick in the random and without hesitation I took the Nash as I knew this was a must have for my PC! PC first!!!!

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

I would love a game used jersey or any other equipment to add to my collection. If I am talking a specific card, I would have to say my whale would be the 1/1 ITG Ultimate Emblem that depicts the “Spider Knight” from those wonderful purple jerseys that London wore back in 2001

Introduction

My name is Bill and I live in Waterloo, ON.  I have been a collector all my life, but hockey cards became a focused hobby for me in 2000.

What/Who Do You Collect?

I am primarily a set collector.  I chase McDonalds and Tim Hortons sets, both since their inception.  I also complete the Upper Deck Series 1 & 2 sets (including Young Guns) every year, going back to 2005.  When McDavid hit the Hobby, I put together the SP Authentic set; including all FWs, FWAs and Franchise Icons.  I have added SPA to my annual chase and I am currently working on the most recent 2018-19 release.

In my early days as a collector, I was a Master Set Collector.  The term “Master Set” has different interpretations within the Hobby, but for me it is a copy of EVERY card from the product checklist.  Master Sets were challenging, but doable, pre-2005.  Since then, products have far too many short prints, even 1/1s, that make a true Master Set practically impossible.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

Completing sets gives me a sense of accomplishment after the thrill of the hunt. I enjoy collecting the Series 1&2 and SPA products because they provide a great snapshot of the players in the league at the time and they include the most sought after rookie cards.  Also, Series 1&2 and SPA are the common currency in the Hobby so they are easily available to buy or trade.  Both products are always well represented at local card shows and the monthly CNC Trade Nights. (Shameless plug: https://cloutsnchara.com/traders-night-2/).

What’s Your Favourite Item?

I have completed 4 Master Sets, along with their sealed boxes & packs, and retailer sell sheets.  Here are my accomplishments so far, along with the number of possible complete Master Sets based on the lowest print run of a card in the set.

  • 2000-01 Topps Stars (25)
  • 2001-02 Topps Heritage (25)
  • 2002-03 Topps Heritage (15? The SSPs were not serial numbered)
  • 2003-04 Parkhurst Original 6 – Toronto Maple Leafs (20)

I chased these master sets because I loved how the Heritage sets honoured the classic designs from early releases of Topps – plus the packs included bubble gum!!  And O6 Leafs was a small set that featured past and present Leaf players, with some great autographs and vintage memorabilia cards.

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

I am still working on the 2000-01 Topps Heritage Set to make it my 5th complete Master Set.  Here are some of the cards I need for my ongoing projects:

2000-01 Topps Heritage: 1954 Autoproofs /10 Lindsay and Howe.   Amonte Autograph unredeemed Redemption Card

2003-04 Parkhurst O6 Leafs: 2004 Spring Expo promo stamped cards

2018-19 SPA: Lots of FWs, FWAs, and Franchise Icons.  Find me online or at a CNC Trade Night for the complete list.

Introduction

My name is Sol (BrookIsland) and I live in New York. I have been a hockey card collector since the late 1980s and got back into the hobby seriously during the 2015-16 season as the Islanders moved (temporarily) to Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

What/Who Do You Collect?

I principally collect Islanders cards in just about all sets, but focus somewhat on the sets with game-used swatches and hard-signed autographs like SP Authentic, Premier and The Cup. Although I focus on the Islanders generally across card brands, I am a *huge* SP Authentic fan and collect just about all cards from the annual set and will at some point hopefully have something close to “master sets” of most of the primary sub-sets from 16-17 SP Authentic of Future Watch Autos, Future Watch Patches, Future Watch Inscribed, Limited Auto etc.

At some point, I will put together a set of the ’80 through ’83 Cup teams (and the Bourne, Goring, Potvin, Trottier, Smith, Nystrom rookies), but have been collecting more recent releases of jersey autos of these players for now.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

I started collecting cards as a way of connecting to the sport and to have more of a sense of connection to the game and the individual players, learning their stats, and generally just feeling closer to the game, particularly at a time of life when getting a replica team jersey, much less a signed, game-used jersey was just not remotely possible!

As my interest in hockey and the hobby evolved over the years, I’ve looked to allocate my card budget on what I believe is the best quality cards with the hits that I enjoy collecting the most which is SPA. The SP Authentic sets, are, at least to me, on a whole different level to all of the other sets. Just love SP Authentic for all of the (almost always) multi-colored patches, hard-signed autos, Acetate Young Guns and other fun hits. Almost every box has something cool in it.

In all honesty, finding an enthusiastic community of fellow collectors at CNC has really kept me in the hobby – super fun sharing the joy of big hits and cards going to members who collect them and have genuine excitement in adding them to their collections.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

Although his departure was deeply painful(!) among the Islanders faithful, a 15-16 John Tavares 1/1 Upper Deck The Cup Dual Patch Dual Tag Black Auto that I recently got in a CNC Break has got to be my favorite card. I’m unquestionably still pretty salty about JT leaving, though understand the decision, and this card reminds me of his fantastic goal that won us the series in 2015-16 against the Florida Panthers. Was an amazing night at Barclays.

I pretty avidly collect all of the Islanders prospects too – from the high-potential not-yet-delivering, Josh Ho-Sang, to the initially unheralded but hopefully-soon-to-be-superstar, Mathew Barzal. Just love the Isles color scheme and the way the cards come out.

Would be awesome to put together an Exquisite Collection set of all the recent Islanders rookies…maybe some day!

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

I am always looking out for unopened boxes and cases of any year of SP Authentic and generally SP Authentic non-Future Watch Auto autographed hits from almost any year from 2011-12 and more recent. Even the smaller, more random sets like Silver Skates Autos and the like interest me.

My name is James and I live in Sudbury, Ontario with my wife and daughter. I started collecting cards in 1990 and am an avid fan of the Los Angeles Kings. I have gone through many phases as a collector but have always loved the game and the hobby.

What/Who Do You Collect?

I collect primarily four specific players, two of which were L.A. Kings; Wayne Gretzky, Luc Robitaille, Ron Francis and Curtis Joseph. My focus is primarily on Autographs/Memorabilia cards of these specific players, with Upper Deck the Cup and Panini Prime cards being my favorites.  I also collect memorabilia and cards from current and past Kings.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

Growing up in the francophone community of Verner, in Northern Ontario, everyone was a Montreal Canadiens fan. Alas, for me there was no greater player or role model than Wayne Gretzky. By the time I was old enough to know about hockey and had started playing, Wayne had been traded to the Kings, and I was an instant super-fan. I have to tell you the 1993 final was not a fun experience given where I lived. Being a fan of Wayne and the Kings, meant latching on to the greatest Left-Winger in history as well Mr. Luc Robitaille. My fascination with Francis and Joseph came later as I appreciated the other teams around the league, watching Francis’s longevity and play-making as well as Joseph’s legendary stints with the Oilers and Leafs made me a fan. I love the game and these greats made me appreciate it even more.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

It’s hard to narrow it down to just a single item, but I will try to do one per player.

Wayne Gretzky: 08-09 UD Black Game Ticket Auto – Not the rarest or most expensive autograph I have in my collection, but my favorite in terms of design. I love everything about this card, it captures a moment in time, incorporates a ticket, features Gretzky in a Kings uniform and has a beautiful silver Autograph.

Luc Robitaille: This is more of an item/moment than just a card. I entered In The Game’s Ultimate Giveaway contest by tracking down cards from that year’s 11-12 ITG Ultimate. There were 6 cards total and I was able to locate three of them. Luckily one of my cards was the winner and I was gifted a Game-Used Helmet from the 91-92 season, it pairs perfectly with my Game-Used Stick from the same season. The other two cards became 1 of 1 Sketch cards of Luc. One of the best Expos I ever attended, filled with great memories of spending time the CNC crew.

Curtis Joseph: Curtis Joseph has many avid followers and collectors, landing cards of his that were really exceptional always proved more challenging, but as luck would have it I managed to score this beautiful 11-12 Limited Logos from the Cup, one of the nicest patches in my collection.

Ron Francis: This is a bit of a toss up as I do have some rarer/more expensive cards in my collection, but tracking down a complete rainbow from The Cup Foundations set (10-11 & 11-12) was always a difficult task. I have only completed two of these of in my collection. Honourable mention to my haul of Prime Colors from 13-14.

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

I am always looking to add new cards to my collection, but have refocused a bit as of late. These are my biggest wants for each player.

Wayne Gretzky: An UD autograph with him depicted in a St.Louis Blues uniform.  For some reason this has eluded me!

Luc Robitaille: Looking for autographs from 18-19 Chronology since I have yet to find any.

Ron Francis: I am still super-collecting Francis patches from 13-14 Prime as well as the last few Cup Foundations I am missing. (Patch /10, and Patch/Auto /5 from 12-13, & the Patch/Auto /5 from 13-14)

Curtis Joseph: I have yet to acquire any CuJo cards from 18-19 UD Clear Cut, so any would be great!

Introduction

My name is Adam and I pretty much collect goalie cards, mainly Patrick Roy and Marc Andre Fleury.

What/Who Do You Collect?

I pretty much collect goalie cards, mainly Patrick Roy and Marc Andre Fleury. I also have a soft spot for Grant Fuhr, Felix Potvin and Vladislav Tretiak. For some reason I also got into collecting graded 9-10 BGS, PSA or KSA O-Pee-Chee rookie cards cards from the 70’s and 80’s of random goalies, but only if they are wearing their mask in the card.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

I started collecting hockey cards after helping my mother make a box of Kraft dinner around 1989 when i was about 9 years old. On the back of the box was a cut out hockey card of Patrick Roy. I cut it out with a butter knife, mangling the crap out of it, but thought it was coolest thing ever.  Soon after I bought my first pack of Pro-Set and things steam rolled from there. A few years ago I was able to find that the same Kraft Patrick Roy card in fine shape with a graded autograph. Was very excited to get it, and it looks great sitting to the original one that I still have.

What’s Your Favourite Item?

My best cards are no doubt my 2003 UD Premier Patrick Roy 1 of 1 Shield autos, for which I have both the Montreal and Colorado versions, and my HG Glossy #/10 Marc Andre Fleury Young Guns. However I would have to say that my favourite card is probably my 91-92 Pro-Set Patrick Roy autograph that I witnessed my little brother pull Christmas morning almost 30 years ago. He was 10 years old at the time, I was 12, and I will never forget when he said, “There’s something on this Patrick Roy card”. Patrick Roy was my favourite player so I was stoked that he pulled it, but kind of jealous that I didn’t get it. Years later he gave it to me on my birthday. That was awesome.

What’s On Your Current Wantlist?

I am looking for a buyback auto of Patrick Roy from the 90-91 Upper Deck series. I think they are #’d to 25 copies. Take care everyone, and keep on enjoying this great hobby!

What/Who Do You Collect?

I collect all Maple Leafs players, and Rookie cards and autos of star players. Particularly focus on Young guns, Future Watch Autos, SPA/SPX and black diamond in autographs or limited series. Enjoy finding rare, unique cards or sets such as Gretzky rare Nelson 9 card set or the 1994 Tall Boys 204 master set of the 64/65 Parkies. Recently collecting many of the unique cards from Ken Reid’s book on Hockey card stories.

Why Did You Start Collecting The Player/Set/Team?

When I was five, I received from my uncle for Christmas a box of OPC wax hockey cards—the ones with a stick of pink bubble gum in each pack. There were enough cards to complete my first set, (69/70). Through my childhood years, I collected, traded, and gamed for the cards I needed to complete each years set. My prized card was the 1979 Gretzky rookie card. The cards were stored in grocery bags for each year.
In my teens, I one day came home to realize that my mom had thrown out one of the large bags storing the first 5 years of cards (1970-75). Classic story but true. Devastated, I swore that it would never happen again. Luckily Gretzky was saved
I continued to collect until the 90’s, when  disinterest set in with the flooding of the hockey card market. Re-entering the hobby a few years ago, my initial purpose was to collect my favourite cards from the early 1970’s that were thrown out. My collection has since grown, including all the Maple Leaf rookies from the mid 1960s to present day, and additionally, star player rookie cards from the mid 60s to present day. Also, Leafs team sets from the past three decades, along with auto rookie cards of admired players such as Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby, McDavid, and many others.
